Piedra River Trail

Just a quick reminder, we have started a YouTube channel. It’s certainly in its infancy stage for sure and will be going through some growing pains but go check it out and we would appreciate it if you would subscribe while there. Here is a link. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCWqRmO1rO4cu3rFANF1iG6Q

Another hike we did while in the Pagosa Springs area was the Piedra River Trail that is a 7.3 mile out and back trail if you do the entire thing.

For us we read enough about the trail that we knew we probably didn’t need to hike it to the end because the last portion just took you out through a grassy meadow and the day we hiked it the weather was marginal with a chance of rain, in fact we did get sprinkled on a bit, so we probably hike closer to just 4 miles I’m guessing. Well actually longer but the story about the “added” distance will come in a second.

This trail is supposed to be one of the more popular trails in the area so we were sure to do it mid-week to avoid as many people as possible AND because of the iffy weather we didn’t really run into many people until the very end of our hike as we were coming out, then we started running into a few people.

The trail itself runs along the river a good amount of the time and there are plenty of places to get in the water if you, OR your four legged friends cares to. Yup, it’s a dog friendly trail.

And part of the trail has you winding through some narrow sections where the cliffs are towing above you proving some great views and shade on the warm days.

We see you Diane!

Ok, so a funny story that happened during this hike.

Once we hiked in as far as we were going to go for the day we spent a little time on the river bank just relaxing and taking in the views before starting our trek back. After walking back to the trail head for maybe a mile Diane realizes that she doesn’t have her hat, she figures she must have set it down or dropped it back by the river where we were relaxing, so we turned around and headed back.

Once we reached where we had been there was a couple enjoying the same area and we saw no hat, so we asked if by chance they had seen it to which they answered “YES, we saw it laying on a rock back up the trail towards the trail head” and described roughly where. Well crap, it was just beyond where we turned around to head back to look for that stupid thing!!!

SO off we went again in search of that hat. Well to that point I took point pretty much the entire hike but Diane was worried that someone just might pick that “valuable” hat up so she was off like a rocket and almost left me in the dust!!

Diane was on a mission to go find her hat!!! She was plain ass hoofing it.

She was pulling away from me as she headed off in search of her hat.

Well sure as shootin we came across the hat safely sitting on a rock alongside the trail not more than 50 yards beyond were we originally tuned around to go find it. If ONLY she had realized it was missing a few minutes later we would have no doubt seen it. Oh well, it extended our hike which was a good thing I guess LOL!!!

OH LOOK!!! There it is on that rock.

She was a happy girl!!

We would certainly recommend this hike if you are ever in the area and we will no doubt do it again when we return for our visit next summer.

That’s it for now, I think we have at least 3 or more hikes to write about as well as a couple other stories before we get caught up on just our Pagosa Springs visit. And then we are a couple stops behind beyond that as well!!! We may NEVER get caught up.

The hat story is hysterical 😂. That is one trail we wish we had had time to do while we were there.

Did you guys do the “Four Mile Trail”? It’s actually a 13 mile loop so I don’t know why it’s called 4 mile. Most people, us included hike to the first falls and back which was actually our favorite hike even though me may or may not feel froggy enough to do it again.
