Road trip to Sandpoint Idaho and beyond

Sunday morning (6/14) we decided would be a good day to take a 45 mile road trip up to the town of Sandpoint for a tour. So we jumped in the Jeep around 8:30 and were on our way.

Sandpoint lies on the shores of Lake Pend Oreille which is the largest lake in Idaho and is 43 miles long and is surrounded by the Selkirk, Cabinet and the Bitterroot mountain ranges so the views were great.

The population of Sandpoint is only 8000 people so it’s a very small, clean quant town. We did a short driving tour before parking and walking the downtown area while peaking in a few shops along the way.

Then we walked down to the Public Park and beach. It was a very nice park with a sandy beach and some nice grassy areas (not sure I would play a game of football in the grass however with all the goose poop lol).

We grabbed a park bench and kicked back for a while just taking I the views and watched the sailboats playing on the lake.

After we had our fill of the metal bench we headed for the Jeep, but not before stopping at an ice-cream shop where we sat outside, ate a cone and checked out a map of the area.

We decided to head northeast out of town on Idaho State Highway 200. The highway has been dedicated as a national scenic byway and given the name Pend Oreille Scenic Byway.

Lake Pend Oreille is the largest lake in Idaho and the 38th largest lake in the United States (by area) with a surface area of 148 square miles. Its 43 miles long and 1150 feet deep in some areas making it the 5th deepest lake in the United States.

It was a nice drive with many turnouts where you can stop to take in the views and leads you through a few very small communities. We turned around just shy of the Montana state line and headed back towards home with a couple stops to check out state parks in the area.

All in all our road trip covered about 175 miles and had us home just in time to watch game 5 of the NBA finals. Not that the game dictated any time frame for us, it just turned out that way.
