Thursday morning we woke to another beautiful sunny day. The temps were supposed to reach the mid 90’s and we had reservations for a Hellsgate Jet-boat dinner cruise at 4:30 with a group of friends so the day had promise!!
But the first thing I wanted to accomplish while the morning temperatures were cooler was to finish adding a couple extra storage shelves in the belly of the coach. We can never have too much storage. The shelves just help make better use of the space we already had.
It probably took me longer to get my tools out than it did to actually do the project LOL!!.
Diane took Jack over to Rich & Chris’s place so they could feed the fish and Jack could run a while and I stayed home and watched some motorcycle races and dirt track races on TV after I finished the shelves.
Then the fun started!! We meet with friends at 4pm for our Jet-boat ride. We ended up getting the front row of seating which was good and bad. It was good because I didn’t have to worry about holding a camera in the air to take pictures but it was bad because my shots were through a windshield. And it was good because it blocked some of the wind on the return trip. And believe me, even though it was a warm day, the combination of being soaked and the wind made for a chilly ride for some. I was in shorts and a tee-shirt and was fine until we de-boarded and the cloths hit my skin with every step.
It was a 36-mile round trip tour that started in downtown Grants Pass and took us down the Rouge River until we almost reached the restricted area of the river. It took us through the Hellgate Canyon with 100-foot high cliffs and plenty of whitewater class II rapids to make it fun. The canyon was made famous for the cliff-jumping scene in “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid”.
During the ride the pilot (Mike) gave us a narrated historic overview of the canyon and pointed out landscape features and wildlife. We saw osprey and bald eagles flying overhead as well as a couple deer and a bunch of ducks. Wildlife was a little more scarce than other trips on the Jet-boat that we have taken.
The ride down was pretty mellow with a lot more of the pointing out of nature and history talks than fast maneuvers and spins. But the return trip was completely different.
On the return ride we stopped for dinner at the OK Corral for a few adult beverages and a great all you can eat country banquet that consisted of salad, ribs, chicken, potato salad, cornbread and rolls, coleslaw and beer and wine. Did I mention it was an all-you-can-eat & drink. You just have to love that!!
The OK Corral is reserved exclusively for Hellgate guests and is a short walk or wagon ride from the river up a grassy slope to an open-air deck with carved log tables and chairs that accommodate up to 350 people at a time. And of course being a holiday weekend it was one of those packed to the gills times. Even though they were at full capacity it was apparent they are used to it because everything flowed perfectly and our pitchers of beer never stayed empty long.
After we stuffed ourselves we headed back to the boat and started our journey back towards Grants Pass.
OK, I will warn you up front that this is my first attempt at putting a video on the blog. And I have only messed around with making a video very few times and it has been a couple years since I have messed with it at all so don’t expect much. And if it works I promise to get better at it. Anyway I hope you enjoy the ride like we did.
(Putting a video on the blog was a NO GO, Word-press wants to charge us $70 per year for that feature so here is a link to it on Youtube.) And a warning, this video is just under 10 min. So those of you who are running thin on data for the month beware LOL!! We know how that can be.
What a great day!!! We loaded on the boat at 4:30 and I think we landed back at the dock just before 8pm. And as you can imagine from the video we all were pretty much drenched right down to the skivvies.
I want to give a big shout out to Coleen for putting the ride together!! We had a great time!!
