A train ride to the Grand Canyon

Friday 5/16 was another beautiful day. The sun was shining and the temps reached the low 80’s with no or very little wind. A perfect day for a train ride from Williams to the Grand Canyon.

The only bad thing about the day was Bob and Karen were leaving. But we are pretty sure it won’t be as long between meet’s this time now that Bob is retiring in just a few short days and they start roaming more. SEE YOU GUYS IN A FEW MONTHS BOB AND KAREN!!!

Our train boarded at 9:15 but before we could get on we sat through a short skit with some cowboys and a gunfight. They get people laughing so it wasn’t bad.

We booked seats on the Luxury Dome car going down. The car had a seating area that sat higher than the rest of the train and large windows for viewing and comfortable seats. It also had a table set up with fruit, yogurt, rolls, juice and coffee. It made for a nice ride.

The car with all the windows is the car we rode down on.

I have a feeling we will be seeing more of these guys.

Here is a link to the different cars. We rode the Fred Harvey going down. http://www.thetrain.com/the-train/train-equipment/

They also had a guy (Jim) walking around playing some tunes. He was actually pretty good and interacted with the passenger’s pretty well.

Our car was the second from the rear of the train and we could get up and make our way to the deck at the rear and watch the tracks speed by.

Standing on the back patio watching the tracks go by. Is that a country song!!?? Well it certainly could be!

And there was a nice sitting area under where our seats were in our car that also had a manned wet bar if you wanted to go below and have a drink and kick back during our 2 hour ride. We just strolled through to have a look.

Once we got to the Grand Canyon we had a little over 3 hours before we had to board the train again for our return trip.

There are a number of tour busses you can jump on that will take you around to different areas and we pondered doing that but we decided to get on a trail at the rim and just walk and take in the sights for as long as we could.

There is no reason to talk about the Grand Canyon itself so we will just share a few pictures. This is the 2nd time Diane and I have been to the Grand Canyon together. The first time was the North Rim and we are already talking about coming back again it’s just so spectacular.

Ok, we took well over 100 pictures but you get the idea LOL!! Too bad the lighting wasn’t more cooperative.

We booked a car in coach for the way back. I guess to save a few dollars LOL!! The seats were not as comfortable but we got back to Williams at the same time as the rest of the train so I guess it was all good.

EXCEPT we got robbed!!!! Yep sure as shootin we were just tooling along in the middle of no place and here come some cowboys on horses up along the train and shot out a tire and caused us to stop so they could board and rob us.

Ooooops,, I told you I thought we would see these guys again!!

I know,, shot out a tire on a train,,, lame,,, sorry. But hey that’s what we were told LOL!! It was probably good for the kids that were on the train.

Once that was over we were on our way again and got back to Williams at 5:45. Once off the train we made our way back to Spencer’s once again and split a Rueben sandwich before heading off to get Jack.

It would have been too long of a day to leave Jack alone in the RV so we boarded him at a kennel they have at the hotel / campground. It’s nice they have the service available and they only charge $23 for the day so they don’t rake you over the coals.

Jack was happy to see us and we made our way home.

Another good day. I think the next time we come to the Grand Canyon we will find a campground closer to the entrance but we wanted to experience the train just once. But we both felt there was too much train time and not enough canyon time. But we enjoyed ourselves just the same.

One more day in town before we head off again.

  1. There are NO words to describe the Grand Canyon. Your pictures did a good job of showing how spectacular it is. But I think everyone should see it in person at least once in their lifetime. I know we will get back there again!!!
